Volunteer Opportunities

Calalta Figure Skating Club is a non-profit organization, and we rely on our members to volunteer to make for a successful skating season. Volunteer work is essential to the quality and success of our club, and to the overall experience of the skater. Prior experience is not required, and it is a great opportunity to learn about the sport of figure skating, how the club and competitions run, as well as a fun way to meet other Club members.

Throughout the season Calalta Figure Skating Club will post volunteer opportunities through the Club Monthly Update and club emails. Usually volunteer opportunities will be filled on a first come first served basis usually through SignUp Genius. We also have opportunities for you to join a committee where you can get more involved with others in an area where you can showcase your talents .

Each committee will be chaired by a board member and each committee will require 3-8 members to assist.

For example, we will have a “Star Series Committee’ or Local Organizing Committee (LOC) which will be responsible for providing the leadership to manage the Star Series #1 competition held Nov 22-24 at Jimmie Condon. The committee or LOC will begin planning in early September and will have 6-7 positions, each of them with their own unique responsibilities. Each member of the LOC will then require numerous volunteers for the actual competition held on Nov 22-24 at JC. These volunteers required for the competition will use Sign Up genius to book their shifts to fulfill their volunteer hours.

Other committees for the 2024-2025 skating season include:

Calgary Winter Invitational Committee – Held Feb 21-23, 2025 at Jimmie Condon. Volunteering at the committee level at the Star Series # 1 Competition is great practice for this comp.

Fundraising:  Lots of variety here as we will be hosting a number of fundraisers including: Davison Orchards (apples) in September, Purdys’ Chocolates at Christmas, Flowers for Mother’s Day, Fill the Freezer for Father’s Day – plus opportunities for other great ideas to raise money (50/50, Ice Melt, Rainbarrels etc). Will need a group of 4-6 people and each would manage a fundraiser. Other volunteers (for sorting and distribution of product) can be scheduled through Sign Up Genius.

Here is how the volunteer hours work. Looking at the table below, if your skater is in the Prestige Performance or Group Star program, you are required to volunteer 6 hours over the time period of Sept 1 to June 30. If you decide not to, you can simply buy out by paying the club $300.  Please note that we would rather have you and your time rather than your money! We believe in the power of community and volunteering is the basis of building our community.

  • If the volunteer hours are NOT completed by June 30 of the current season, the designated dollar amount will be applied to the account or the credit card on file.

Once we settle in, further opportunities will be emailed out to everyone.

If you have a skill that could be useful to Calalta, let us know. This could be an opportunity to complete your volunteer hours.
